In pandemic, NYC families discover homes in CNY: ‘I couldn’t imagine a more magical place to live’

Jessica Wong

Syracuse, N.Y. — “Mom? Mom? Dad? Where is everyone?” Ivo Guenther, 7, often shouts inside the new Manlius home that seems cavernous compared to the family’s old Brooklyn row house.

Dad might be outside, dreaming about how to turn a 200-year-old barn into a studio where he could continue his fine art painting. Mom, an art therapist in a school, could be managing remote classrooms — in her own space.

“It’s a total game-changer that you could be doing something in a different room than someone, like for some time,” said Tiffany Pollack, Ivo’s Mom.

Super-Earth Conditions Simulated in the Lab to Discover if They’re Habitable

Jessica Wong

Deep inside planet Earth, there is a liquid outer core and a solid inner core that counter-rotate with each other. This creates the dynamo effect that is responsible for generating Earth’s planetary magnetic field. Also known as a magnetosphere, this field keeps our climate stable by preventing Earth’s atmosphere from being lost to space. So when studying rocky exoplanets, scientists naturally wonder if they too have magnetospheres.

Unfortunately, until we can measure an exoplanet’s magnetic fields, we are forced to infer their existence from the available evidence. This is precisely what researchers at the Sandia National Laboratories did with

Pigs can play video games, scientists discover

Jessica Wong

Pigs might not be able to fly, but they can play video games. In a new study, researchers from Purdue University in Indiana, US have shown that pigs can use a digital screen and joystick, operated by their snout, to move a cursor around for rewards.

This is a complex task. The animals need to understand the link between moving around a joystick and what’s happening on a computer screen, and then link what’s happening on the screen to getting a reward. The four pigs tested were all able to do that to some extent, showing off their smarts.

Researchers discover new malware from Chinese hacking group

Jessica Wong

Researchers have discovered new “highly malleable, highly sophisticated” malware from a state-backed Chinese hacker group, according to Palo Alto Network’s Unit 42 threat intelligence team.

Why it matters: The malware “stands in a class of its own in terms of being one of the most sophisticated, well-engineered and difficult-to-detect samples of shellcode employed by an Advanced Persistent Threat (APT),” according to Unit 42.

  • The malware, which Unit 42 has dubbed “BendyBear,” bears some resemblance to the “WaterBear malware family” (hence the bear in the name), which has been associated with BlackTech, a state-linked Chinese cyber spy group, writes Unit 42.
