The COVID-19 pandemic has affected virtually every segment of American society, especially travel. But there are signs that Alabamians are ready to hit the road.

Trips to Discover is out with a study that ranks states in terms of travel-related search engine activity – that’s hotels, flights and cruises. And Alabama ranks sixth among the states.

That’s actually a pretty big leap. In fact, Alabama experienced the largest growth in travel search activity among the states since 2019, moving up from No. 30.

The numbers reflected renewed interest among Americans in travel, after a year of restricted movement and economic upheaval due to coronavirus measures. Dayne Ford, founder and CEO of TripsToDiscover.com, said the site has been producing travel content and working with travel booking since 2014 and has never seen such a sharp increase.

Hawaii had the largest decrease in travel search activity since 2019, moving from fifth to No. 33. But some things haven’t changed – Florida still leads the nation, unchanged since 2019.

Breaking it down, 71 percent of Alabama travel-related search engine activity dealt with hotels, while 27 percent looked for flights. The remaining 2 percent was cruise related.

Only Mississippi had a larger percentage of hotel searches. Hawaii had the most flight searches. New Hampshire led the nation in curiosity over cruises.
