Blood is vital to life, and a healthy body replenishes worn-out blood cells with new ones throughout one’s lifetime. If something goes wrong with this process, serious illness will result.

Researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS) have now discovered a mechanism controlling the replenishment of blood cells, which could have relevance for new treatments for blood cancers and other blood-related diseases.

Expert cautions against frackingmethod to explore oil, natural gas

Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT-Hyderabad) chief scientist (retired) K. Babu Rao has observed that fracking method to be adopted by the Vedanta group to explore oil and natural gas in Kaza block of Krishna district will be disastrous and lead to the ecological imbalance in the fertile region.

Vedanta Limited (Cairn Oil & Gas Division) has proposed to drill 35 hydrocarbon wells in the eastern Krishna district to produce 30,000 barrels of oil per day and 30 million metric standard cubic feet of natural gas. The ₹650-crore project is supposed to be commenced in 2021.

PennDOT issues travel restrictions for winter storm | Pennsylvania News

In anticipation of winter weather throughout much of the state on Sunday, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is advising motorists to avoid all unnecessary travel during the upcoming storm.

PennDOT anticipates that it will implement travel restrictions on trucks and other vehicles on certain roadways around the state, which will remain in place until conditions warrant their removal.

Officials say, effective at noon on Sunday, January 31, vehicle restrictions are anticipated on the following roadways that align with Tier 1 of the commonwealth’s weather event vehicle restriction plan:

High schoolers discover four exoplanets through mentorship program — ScienceDaily

They may be the youngest astronomers to make a discovery yet.

This week, 16-year-old Kartik Pinglé and 18-year-old Jasmine Wright have co-authored a peer-reviewed paper in The Astronomical Journal describing the discovery of four new exoplanets about 200-light-years away from Earth.

The high schoolers participated in the research through the Student Research Mentoring Program (SRMP) at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian. Directed by astrochemist Clara Sousa-Silva, the SRMP connects local high schoolers who are interested in research with real-world scientists at Harvard and MIT. The students then work with their mentors on a year-long research project.
